A few more old games for you to try out.
Deus Ex:
One of the first "proper" RPGs, in my mind. It was very plot-heavy, and guns could be picked up and discarded as part of an inventory still widely used, though I can't claim that it was the first game to use this system. The classic skill point system is present, as is nanotech, implants that allow JC Denton, the protagonist, to perform various useful feats. These aren't overpowered, and tweak the player just enough to make it realistic while also an exciting cyberpunk world - enhanced speed and jumps and such.

This game is a definite must for any RPG fan, and highly rated on my personal list of favourite games.
Far Cry:
Whether it's old enough to be seen as a classic, I don't know. But if you haven't tried it, perhaps you should. If only to realise that Far Cry 2 follows on right after Far Cry 1, if by "follows on" you mean "is not related to in any way" and by "right after" you mean "or mentions". This Far Cry is about a guy in a flashy shirt running around trying to stop an army of supermutants, guided by a strange, mysterious superior. The gameplay is hard, and a downright slog in places, but the graphics are stunning for a classic game, and it's a nice comparison to anything these days.

Unreal Tournament:
The first Unreal Tournament that came around wasn't as gory as the new ones. It didn't have as many weapons, or any vehicles. But it had Pressure Chamber, a map where hitting a button caused people to become trapped in a room which made them explode. And that's all I really need to say about this game.
Oh yeah, and it's really good. Try it.

That should do you for a while.
