Review – Peggle (XBLA)

Peggle. Chances are you’ve at least heard of it; it was one of the games included in the Steam version of the Orange Box back in 2007. Its finally now made its way to Xbox Live Arcade, after a couple of web and DS incarnations.

Pictures don’t do Peggle justice. Go and grab the demo. Then buy it.

There isn’t really much to say about Peggle; it is hard to put your finger on what it is that makes the game great, it just is. The all out celebration when you finish a level? Quite probably. The challenge of the level? Could be that to. The sheer joy in completing a level when you thought it was impossible? Might be that as well. The combination of all of these factors makes a game that is just brilliant. You wouldn’t think so looking at the game, but seriously, this game is brilliant.

Peggle XBLA offers a couple of online and local multiplayer modes that are good fun; the pick-up-and-play-ability of Peggle makes it a great little party game. The snappily named ‘Peg Party’ lets you play against friends over Xbox Live, another neat little addition to the game. It’d be nice to see the local multiplayer allowing four (instead of two) players and more of a challenge than just doing random levels, but its easy to overlook these minor points.

The main bulk of the game comes in the form of sequential levels, which vary enough to still be interesting. Each group of levels has its own mentor, with a special ability. The levels get progressively harder, presenting a bigger and bigger challenge. You’ll get through the levels quite quickly; there aren’t too many of them and they’re rediculiously addictive!

If the sheer number of synonyms I’ve used for brilliant in this review haven’t convinced you to buy Peggle, do yourself a favour and go onto your Xbox and get the demo. You won’t regret it.
