Review – Boom Blox Bash Party

You've got to be kidding me. Please, tell me it's a joke. Steven Spielberg joining the world of gaming? And he comes up with a name like "Boom Blox Bash Party"? I feel faintly ill. I'll go take a lie down. Maybe actually try the game instead of complaining about the title.

(10 minutes later) I feel worse. So much worse. I tried the game. It's sort of golf meets the crossbow part of Legend of Zelda meets a load of exploding cardboard boxes.

Basically, it's a lot of minigames involving boxes. That's the best way to describe it. And I assume that's the point of the title. But I don't see the purpose of "Party".... Oh wait, I do. It's to show that it is, in fact, a crap game that can only be made good when there are at least 3 people playing. That doesn't mean that the abundance of people improves the level of fun created by the game - the fun added by extra people is the competition and the witty banter against each other. It can be achieved by any means - throwing a ball to each other produces much the same reaction.

OK, so let's give a rundown on the entire title.

Boom - This is due to the fact that many of the levels involve "blox" that explode when either shot, propelled, hit against another block, or so on. This should, in theory, lead to physics engine fun, though it doesn't. I'll explain why in a minute.

Blox - The game creator's idea of humour, where "Blocks" is changed to "Blox" as if it adds a whole new dimension to the game. In fact, all it does is point out how out of touch we game nerds are. Oh, did I say "we"? I meant "them". Even I'm not that out of touch.

Bash - the motion of many of the minigames. Ball hits block hits other block... bash. Block hits block. Bash.

Party - I've already explained.

So yeah, there's golf related games, there's ones where you fire blocks into other blocks, and there's variety. I have to hand it to the makers, when they made this game, at least they gave it variety. There's different sorts of maps - space maps, where gravity is non-existent, for example. It lends a whole new set of ways of thinking to the game. Not to mention the map editor - create your own maps for others to try, the classic game maker approach when they feel there's not enough content from their own hands - get the players to do it for you, while they get satisfaction out of it.

In my opinion it isn't worth getting this game, however. There's plenty of variety, but it's not a game you'd want to play on your own for hours. It's the sort of thing I fill up an empty 5 or 10 minutes playing, though I usually play the free, though slightly lower quality versions on the internet. And for £24.84 for a used copy, I don't think I need the motion sensitive 3D graphics. Do you?

Nometet.com says: ★★½☆☆

+ Loads of different games to try

+ Loads of worlds to try them in

+ Good for filling time

- Way too expensive for what it is

- Only good for playing with friends

- The motion sensing doesn't really add much, the developers didn't know how to use it to their advantage, though this was the right sort of game to use it in.

  • I was pretty surprised by this review, especially after both Boom Blox games were received so well be people. I've always meant to get round to playing either of the games, with this meant to be a better game than the original, but i have a few doubts now. Are the physics not fun enough to make the game a blast in multiplayer. I might still give it a go though.

    • The physics are just things you expect to find in games nowadays. Instead of them adding a dimension where you need to aim your shot by flicking the Wiimote in the right direction, you select a point to aim at, and the flicking only affects the strength of the throw. Here the game lost a lot of my interest - I have little time for games that could use the Wii for what it's supposed to be used for, and then throw it away on gimmicks.
