Dark

Indie games are something of an acquired taste, as you can find some real gems but at the same time there are some terrible hashes in there too. Suffice to say, they are something that I have never really been able to enjoy or I’ve haven’t found the hidden gems that is until I played Dark.

Dark1

Dark is actually something different and interesting and had me hooked from the start. The concept is one that I didn’t totally understand at the beginning of my time with the game, I guessed that it was a platform puzzler but other than that I had no idea. Thankfully, as you play it does come out of the darkness. Here is what I could tell from the game: you play as a strange diamond shaped err… thing, is the best way to describe it, and you leave your house or cave or strange dark place one day only for the ground beneath you to give way. As you can guess, I actually have no idea what is going on in the game that is purely down to the fact that the only thing that we are told at the beginning of the game is the controls and then you’re left to it.

As the name suggests the setting of the game is in pretty much total darkness. You have a few lighted areas that are dotted around each level. These lighted areas are normally around important objects that their use will allow you to progress through the level, the objects featured in the game vary from cogs and lifts to balls and triangles with eyes, each can be used to gain access to a new area.

Dark2

Setting of the game suits the atmosphere that the game creates brilliantly, the pure fact that most of the levels are covered in darkness mean that you get this deep feeling of being alone and cut off. Especially as the darkness mixes with the soundtrack to create this feeling of the unknown, I never in the half an hour that it took to complete turned off the sound as it added so much to the experience.

The unfortunate thing from a reviewer’s point of view is that to explain anymore about the game would take the magic that is key to the game’s experience away. Games like this can only come from small developers and in a lot of cases they are the reason that the game industry moves forward. Dark has an appeal that cannot be matched it is simple and awe-inspiring at the same time and for a pound (80MSP) it is worth every penny.
