Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 : Uprising

What with all the recent restructuring and that, this article from a few weeks back somehow got lost in the depths of Wordpress. Which is a shame, really, because it’s actually quite good, if brief – remember, it is only an expansion…

Or is it? Interestingly, you don’t need the original to play it, so in reality, it is essentially a slightly less deep version of the same game with new units and campaigns. You will, however, need a PC because it is not, like the original, being released on Xbox 360, for some inexplicable reason. Not content with losing just half of their customers in one swoop, they have also decided to only release it as a digital download, which is why you won’t have seen it in the shops anywhere. This is quite a silly move by EA, but then it doesn’t affect me , because I have the game already. And I should probably be reviewing it, so I shall.

To be honest, it doesn’t differ that much from the original – they have retained the cartoony graphics, the cheery post-apocalyptic-WWIII style and the cast of REAL actors in the cutscenes…what am I talking about? IT’S THE SAME GAME.

The selling point of it are the four new campaigns, one for each faction from the original and one new one, in my opinion the most fun – the “Yuriko Omega” campaign. She is a psychic from the Empire of the Rising Sun (Japan), who, after escaping from a secret psychic research facility, is forced to work for the Japanese on ever harder assignments using her ever upgradable psychic moves. Interestingly, you cannot move the camera like in a traditional RTS – it is locked to tracking her, so it has more of an RPG feel, especially as you can only control her. This is, to be honest, quite entertaining, as she has powers to,say lift things up (at a distance) and throw them, or cause people to explode. The problem with all all these new campaigns is that there are only four missions in each, which is a bit of a rip-off, really.

You do get the full skirmish mode, however (complete with the new, ever silly units) but to stop people buying this new, cheaper version instead of the older one, they have omitted the multiplayer, which seems a bit harsh.

Just to watch the rise of the new Soviet empire and control a mad Japanese girl with her (literally) brain exploding power this is worth the buy, like the original. So get out there and buy it!
