Oh, joy of joys. Another sports game for the Wii. Wonder where they got that idea…
Sarcasm aside, this is all in all not as bad as I had anticipated. Basically, it’s a collection of minigames. Stuff you could find on the internet, only customized for the Wii and put in one CD. This is not an untapped resource, and has even formed its own genre, labelling itself “party games”. Essentially, this means: Don’t play this game on your own, because you won’t enjoy it. It’ll last you maybe ten minutes before you tire of playing it. And there are no unlockables whatsoever. Not even a new character. Slightly irritating, but still. Playing with friends, however, is an enjoyable experience like no other. There is nothing like going canoeing with some mates with Wiimotes – it is truly a joy to watch your friendfalp his arms aimlessly while you relax, watching him go in circles. And dropping a waterballoon on him/her/it while rock climbing (don’t ask) is amusing and doesn’t lead to you having your arms ripped off by a soaking amigo.
Obviously I can’t assault the plot, and the graphics are Wii-tastic. I’m going to have to fill this review with discussion on the multiplayer. Mainly because this is a multiplayer. Unless you’re the freak who gets the high score in Minesweeper.
The games list is nothing to be proud of, and I shall dissect it forthwith:
Beach Volleyball
Beach volleyball is much like real volleyball. Except you’re not on a beach, and you’re playing with Wiimotes. Suspend your disbelief, and you’ll enjoy this.
Inner-Tubing
Essentially pick up stars, while avoiding everyone else and stopping them from picking up stars.
Wild Water Canoeing
The most awesome thing in the history of party games. Play it with you and a friend on the same canoe. You’ll be in hysterics trying not to go in circles. I and a friend of mine, who I shall refer to as Crazy Chees3 for reasons I shall not disclose, had great fun doing this for hours. We got repetitive strain injury.
Hurdle Derby
A bit like Wii Play’s Cow Racing, but with a bit more fun.
Slalom Showdown
Skiing down a hill. See SSX for similar concept.
Cliff Hangers
Climb a cliff while dodging bombs, jumping over metal patches and avoiding waterballoons from your friends.
Smash Badminton
Badminton. What did you expect?
Rapid Fire Archery
A bit like Shooting Practice on Wii Play, but with the fun of pulling back the bow.
Joust Duel
Ever played gladiator at a fete? This is it on a massive platform. A bit samey.
Curling
It’s curling. A clever move by the government to trick people into sweeping ice rinks for free.
Arena Dodgeball
It’s dodgeball. Great fun, no pain.
Air Racers
Think Mario Kart with less weapons and an extra direction of movement.
All in all, this game could have been better, it could have been worse. But it’s still fun to drop water balloons on Avril Lavigne.
