I know everyone is writing about it, but the chance to play the new Call of Duty was a chance that we could not pass up. So. I downloaded the beta to my Xbox and dived straight into a game. Five seconds later I was dead and realised I should have looked at the controls. I missed out on Call of Duty (COD) 4, so I didn’t have the experience or skill that everyone else in the game had, which was unfortunate. I think thats the best way to describe it. I have to say, I wasn’t very impressed. The didn’t seem very polished at all, and there were a lot of glitches. Hopefully these will be sorted out by the time of the final release.
Virtually everything from COD4 is there is World at War, but thats the problem. COD4 was groundbreaking and had great original features (I know I said I’d never played it, but don’t worry; I know what I’m talking about), and World at War just seems to be copying them. But why change a winning formula? Developers Treyarch have obviously tried to make it different, with the reintroduction from COD3 of vehicles and the the ability to unlesh the hounds, but the multiplayer just seems to be trying to replicate the amazing success of last year’s COD.
But I don’t think many were expecting groundbreaking advances in the multiplayer this year from Treyarch (last year’s COD was developed by Infinity Ward), and the focus for advances has been on the single player story, taking it to Japan and adding all sorts of new weapons (ie a flamethrower) into the mix.
Remember though, a beta is called a beta for a reason: its not finished yet!
Call of Duty World at War is out on 14th November on all next gen platforms.
