Opinion: Gaming Updates

Okay, so currently games seem to pretty much update themselves over the course of the time you are with your choice title. What I mean is that there seems to be this constant flow of new version of older titles with updated gameplay or additional modes that are sold on as full price games. But why, I remember the days of the Xbox and PS2 where you only got an updated game from series like Metal Gear Solid but that was expected and you were never really missing out on that much.

Nowadays there seems to be updates for games coming out for everything under the sun. Looking at the most recent one in the news at the moment is Resident Evil 5, a great game. But there is now, in case you don’t know, there is a new version coming out this year that adds new content and characters to the game and will include the full game too but will probably retail at full fat price. Why is that good for the customer? So you have completed the game enjoyed it and like the look of just the new content, so what can you do but buy this new title instead of being able to access the content from the off. In some respects I would want a new entry into a series sooner than having the same game I’ve bought before just repackaged and fed to me again.

I know that it has been happening for a long time and it isn’t anything new, PC seems the worst victim with Gold Editions and the such of games that package new content together with old. But with the advent of consoles being more updatable in terms of being connected to the Internet why make us buy the game again. But then again this seeps into the argument about DLC, why should we buy that as a long of it seems to be just additions that were part of the game and just removed to make the company more money. Like Assassin’s Creed 2, the DLC that has been announced is the two missing DNA sequences from the full game. It just seems that Ubi have taken the finished game and cut two sections out to make more money. I’m not being stupid of course the reason they make the games is to make money, it’s a business after all. But they are just ripping off customers who are loyal to them for a few extra coins.

Does this tick you off? Can you not stand having to pick up extras that should have been in the game taken out and offered up to you as DLC? If so voice your annoyance below.
