Games are fun. Games are engaging. But would they be the same without music? Some might say the SFX of swords/guns/lasers/cannons/sims/cars/mushrooms being stamped on by a small communist Italian plumber/buildings being built is soundtrack enough. But, let’s face it, without music the games just are not the same. If you go into the options menu of any game and turn the music off, the game is somehow shallower, more real. But not as…it’s hard to describe…engaging. It no longer seems like a game. Some game music is like film music – actually really well written and apt. This is not just good game music. This is music you could have on your iPod. (Actually, on second thoughts…)
So game music is important. I put this to Nometet and Alex and they agreed. But none of us could decide which was best and how to organise them. So here are our top ten games to buy if you just want to listen to the music…
10. Sonic: R…they should release this as a record.

9. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion…brilliantly atmospheric, the music from Oblivion adds brilliantly to the sense of adventure in the game.
8.
LittleBigPlanet… the music in LittleBigPlanet is just brilliant. Nothing more to say.

7. Worms Armageddon
6. The Age of Empires series. In my opinion, number II is best but…no, but nothing, it is, be it as it is, 10 years old

5. Super Mario…a classic!
4. Halo 3…haunting? Yes. Good? Yes…

3. Team Fortress 2 … fun game, funny music

2. Battlefield series…and here is the Battlefield Rock theme from the Wake Island 2142 map on Battlefield 2142

And of course, the brilliant music from Battlefield Bad Company
1. Rome : Total War …conteversial and biased I know, and there is no single piece of music in the game that is the best. But collectively it is brilliant and goes magnificently with the game.
Editor’s note – Will is a huge Total War fan, so that is probably why he put it at number one. That said, the music is very good!
