Wait! It’s not! Portal is actually back! You can download it now from the Xbox Live Arcade for only 1200 Microsoft points.
Should you? Well, that depends if you’ve already got the Orange Box, beacuse Portal: Still Alive is the game from the Orange Box, with the only extras being 14 “challenge levels”. I’m going to concentrate on the extra levels, as chances are you’ve played Portal before. If you haven’t, then read the Orange Box review here.
These challenge levels are not easy. Well, the first one is, but after that they’ll take a while to do and challenge your Portal thinking to the extreme. If you go for the gold medal, in which you have to take as few footsteps, fire as few Portals as possible and do it as quickly as possible, you could probably get ten hours out of the extra levels, but if you don’t do that, you’re still left with the very short game.
I was very disappointed not to have GLaDOS telling me the next test was impossible or that there would be cake, it is almost as is this is a rushed budget version of Portal, wish some of the ideas left over from the last game. But its not all bad; the game still has the Portal feel to it, even if some bits of it are slightly less imaginative – to mix it up, you’re given not a cube but a ball!
Portal: Still Alive is a difficult one. The extra levels aren’t that special, and the Orange Box is available for about twice the price of Still Alive. If you’ve got a decent gaming PC then you buy Portal off Steam for $10 and get the extra challenge maps free. So that leaves people without the Orange Box and massive Portal fans without a decent gaming PC as contendors to buy Still Alive. If you fit into one of those categories, then yes, buy it. If you don’t, pass on this one.
